Rockhill Restoration Session July 22-23, 2017.
The next FEBT Rockhill work session will take place Saturday and Sunday, July 22-23, 2017. We will work our usual daylight savings hours of 9 am to 5 pm Saturday and 9 am to 5 pm Sunday.
Keep your own eye on the weather by visiting accuweather.com and checking the Rockhill zip code, 17249.
On the evening of July 7, prolonged rain caused a large tree at the foot of the Markle House hill to topple onto a power line that runs along the west (non-EBT) side of Jordan Run. This in turn caused a utility pole to fall and to interrupt service to the Paint Shop and most of the rest of the EBT yard.
Last week, FEBT member and professional electrician Charlie Wootton repaired the damage to the electrical service entering the Paint Shop, which was caused by the stress on the wire from the falling power pole. The local electric utility is projecting Wednesday or Thursday of this week to replace the utility pole and reconnect us.
The steel and combine crews will have some clean-up of storm debris to do on our side of Jordan Run as a kickoff to the session.
Power for the freight house project is available.
MealsLocal restaurants are available in Orbisonia.
The Rats will get the freight house rigged for jacking, and hopefully get a bit of lift on it. If weather and turn-out permit, they may also finish the primer red paint on the foundry. Jim Bacon will lead this project.
Assuming the electricity is back on, the combine crew will continue with removing old paint from the inside of the car, fabricating sheathing for the upper body and clerestory, and installing the rubber roofing. Work will also continue on the baggage door posts. We will also be painting clerestory sash and sheathing preparatory to installation. Lee Rainey will lead this project.
This crew will be working on the box car, passenger trucks, and, if time and people are available, on the lumber shed. Steve Jacobs leads the Steel Crew.
Repairs will continue at the south end of the locomotive shop. Bill Adams leads this work.
To take part you must be 18 and a member of the FEBT (or join the FEBT at the work site.) These are insurance requirements. We are guests of the railroad and need to behave accordingly.
Last-minute walk-ons are always welcome at our sessions, but if possible, drop me an e-mail in advance to let me know that you are coming. It helps with the planning.
See you there!
