TT 8-3 Mixed Freight:

Oral History Project Urgently Needs Transcribers:

A growing collection of taped interviews with former railroaders, miners, loggers, and others in the Broad Top Region is being amassed by the FEBT Oral History Project. For example, in October, three hours of tapes were made with 103-year old, former EBT employee Roy Morgan. However, Oral History still is trying to do better than just fly. Right now we are stalled on transcribing tapes. This unique material cannot be printed in the TT or used in forthcoming books unless it is transcribed from tape to paper. FEBT urgently needs volunteers to transcribe tapes. Transcribing interviews is one of the most ideal "jobs" for which a member could volunteer. You can do it at home. You can do a little or a lot. Best, you learn a lot about the EBT. Please contact, as soon as possible, Oral History Project Director Craig Williams, 119 Melony Lane, Lititz, PA 17543.

Boxcar and Flatcar for Early E.B.T. Modelers in HOn3 from Hoffman:

Two early East Broad Top freight car kits are available now from David M. Hoffman, 1619 North Eden Circle, Titusville, FL 32796. Both cars combine pre-cut basswood and lost wax brass parts and include correct trucks, making them a good value at $28.00 each. No soldering is required. EBT-50 is for the EBT first generation, 28-foot wooden flatcar. EBT-117 is the first generation, for the EBT, Billmeyer & Smalls 26-foot wooden boxcar. Among the basswood parts for the boxcar is a pre-cut, solid body block. With this kit, HOn3 modelers can represent each car in the development of EBT boxcars. The kit also is the perfect host for that nice EBT round herald decal that comes with, but predates FEBT Car Shops' second generation boxcar kit.

HO-Scale Clark Dump Car Model Coming in Brass:

One of the most interesting and difficult to model East Broad Top freight cars will be within easy reach of HO-scale modelers by the Fall of 1992. That is when W&R Enterprises will be importing a brass model of the Clark Car Company side dump car. The model will be of Clark's standard catalogue car with arch bar trucks. This is how the cars operated for many years on railroads across the U.S., and on the EBT. One such standard gauge car, modified by the addition of an extension to the top and dual gauge couplers, became EBT No.13. With dump car No.12 (a Western Wheeled Scraper car on narrow gauge trucks) the Clark car shuttled back and forth from the Mount Union coal washing plant, hauling waste material. No price yet but, you can reserve now through your dealer. W&R Enterprises' address is P.O. Box 3235, Alhambra, CA 91803 U.S.A. Thanks to FEBT member Dr. Fulton Li for providing extra information on this interesting model.

F.E.B.T Logo Contest Attracts Nine Designs:

1991 Reunion attendees got a chance to express their preference from among nine designs for an FEBT logo. Eight designs incorporated the railroad's shield herald in some way. The contest was intended to be advisory to the Board of Directors, who will consider the designs further at their December 15 meeting. The design chosen could be used on objects as large as a flag or as small as a business card, so there are technical factors to be considered in this important decision. Most popular at the Reunion was a design by Edwin Keith that included the M-1, as well as the EBT herald. Thanks also go to Mallory Hope Ferrell, Andrew Frey, Stan Knotts, Deane Mellander, and Phil Padgett, all of whom submitted designs now under consideration.

Smithsonian Associates to Tour South End of EBT in March:

The South end of the East Broad Top, including Saltillo and the mining towns of Robertsdale and Woodvale, will be the focus of an all-day Saturday bus tour to be offered by the Smithsonian Resident Associates Program next March. FEBT member Vagel Keller is working with the Smithsonian to organize the tour, that will include an ethnic lunch in Woodvale. Mining history will be presented by Ron Morgan at Robertsdale, where the FEBT Museum in the Station also will be open. This very full day on the south end will wrap up at Orbisonia Yards before heading back to the starting point in Washington, D.C. Seating will be limited by the capacity of the bus. If you are a member of Smithsonian Resident Associates, watch for an announcement, or contact Vagel Keller directly by writing to him at 7241 Worsley Way, Alexandria, VA 22310. Sounds like a great way to shake off cabin fever.
