ELECTION RESULTS: DEANE MELLANDER ELECTED CHAIRMAN & HENRY INMAN JOINS
RESTRUCTURED BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Results of the 1992 FEBT Board of Directors election placed Dr. Henry Inman
of Richmond, Virginia, on the Board as a new Director and returned incumbents
David Bucher, Richard Keller, Philip Padgett, and George Shaffer. Hank Inman
has been active in the Restoration Program at Robertsdale and Timber Transfer
readers currently are enjoying his series of plans for EBT handcar sheds. The
Board bid farewell to Craig Williams who decided not to run for re-election
because of business commitments. Craig will continue on FEBT's volunteer
staff as Director of the Oral History Project.
At its first meeting, the new Board initiated a planned reorganization by
electing Deane Mellander to the new position of Chairman of the Board.
Richard Keller was re-elected President. In the new structure, the Chairman
will call and run the Board meetings and the President of FEBT will report to
the Chairman. The President will function as an executive, supervising all
FEBT staff. To complete the reorganization, the Chairman and the President
will work together to create several new Vice Presidents with functional
responsibilities.
EAST BROAD TOP IN PRINT
Broader awareness and knowledge of the East Broad Top Railroad National
Historic Landmark should flow from articles soon to appear in three
nationally-based magazines. Expected first is an article to appear in the
January-February issue of Locomotive & Railway Preservation (circulation
14,800). The L&RP article reports on the EBT's new cooperative agreement with
the National Park Service and the threat presented by the proposed 500
kilovolt power line. Around the same time, Americana magazine, a general
heritage and historic preservation bimonthly with a circulation of 60,000,
will publish a feature on endangered National Historic Landmarks that
includes the EBT. The April issue of Trains magazine (circulation 103,000)
will include a large feature on the EBT, written by Karl Zimmerman. The
Trains article will provide a history and general introduction to the EBT
today, including a brief discussion of the promising moves toward
preservation and the threat of the power line. Friends of the EBT cooperated
with all three publications on development of these very welcome articles.
