Gift of East Broad Top Railroadiana Enhances FEBT Collection

A generous gift from Charles M. Sullivan of East Broad Top R.R. artifacts and documents and other railroadiana was received in November. The gift enhances the Friends of the EBT collection with artifacts for display in the Robertsdale Station Museum, documents for addition to the Roy Wilburn Memorial Library, and significant general railroadiana to support funding of other EBT-specific acquisitions. The East Broad Top railroadiana includes: the telegraph key and sounder from the EBT's Mount Union Station, the EBT station agent's date stamp from Coles, a steel and brass switchlock, a brass switchlock (probably 19th century), a piece of 55-pound filler rail from Rockhill Furnace, EBT timetables No.87 and 104, and a large quantity of EBT train orders and forms.

Highlighting the general railroadiana is a beautiful Pullman Company brass kerosene hand lantern. Mr. Sullivan also donated 150 public timetables from the late 1940's to the early 1960's for railroads throughout the United States. Another box contains miscellaneous railroad and Railway Express Agency paper and a third box contains railroad clippings from the late 1940's to the early 1960's. Mr. Sullivan has donated a collection of Railroad magazines from the 1940's and 1950's. These are a treasure trove of information from the period when steam was at its zenith in railroading. Rounding out the gift are five 1950's Pennsylvania Railroad calendars reproducing paintings by the late Grif Teller, a 1955 Baltimore & Ohio calendar, and nine Norfolk & Western posters from the 1950's.

Friends of the EBT is very grateful to Mr. Sullivan for these materials that he collected between 1954 and 1956. The East Broad Top artifacts will be placed on display as soon as appropriate space is ready. All of the materials are being appraised. Donations in kind to Friends of the East Broad Top, Inc. are tax-deductible.

E.B.T. Action in Orbisonia Featured in Limited Edition Color Print

"East Broad Top Railroad" is the title of a color painting by Larry Fisher that captures the passage of trains at Orbisonia Station. With just a little bit of artist's licence, the best known elements of the East Broad Top are brought together with wonderful drama and color. Looking south across the tracks from the station, the painting depicts EBT No.12 heading south into the mountains with a passenger train while EBT No.17 brings a loaded coal train north. Waiting on a siding is the M-1 gas-electric while the shops form a background. The painting is available in a limited edition of 500 prints with a 15 by 20-inch image on a 19 by 24-inch sheet. The price is $125.00 from Heritage Art Editions, Inc., P.O. Box 285, Mount Brydges, Ontario N0L1W0) Canada.

Coming in 1994: a G-gauge EBT Caboose from Bachmann and a Ron Morgan Booklet on Roy Wilburn

Bachmann will introduce a G-gauge model of the East Broad Top Railroad's 8-wheel caboose in 1994, according to Barry Moore who saw a pilot model at the Chicago trade fair. The classic symmetrical lines of the EBT's caboose should make this a hit in the general market for Bachmann's line of reasonably-priced G-gauge trains. EBT fans modeling in any scale will find this one hard to resist.

Meanwhile, Ron Morgan is nearly ready to move into publication of a booklet based on his series of interviews with the late Roy Wilburn that was published in the Huntingdon Daily News a few years ago. Roy Wilburn served the coal mines and the railroad for 60 years, capping his career as Operating Vice President of the EBT. Ron Morgan has reedited the text and plans to add some new photographs. Watch for details in the next TT.
