New East Broad Top R.R. All Color Book Under Way
East Broad Top - Narrow Gauge Survivor, the new book by Deane Mellander, is
now at the publisher. The book features more than 250 color photographs of
the EBT in action. The vast majority of the photos were made during regular
service on the narrow gauge railroad between 1946 and 1956. Coverage includes
the EBT's Shade Gap Branch, Coles Valley Branch, and the coal mines at
Robertsdale and Alvan. Several times the author has stopped progress toward
publication to look at just one more collection and, indeed, found more rare
images of the railroad to include. His hope is that this will be the
definitive color book on the EBT. Those who saw the slides at the 1994 FEBT
Reunion came away optimistic that he will achieve his goal. The final price
has not yet been established because of changes in UPS shipping rates as well
as rates for the color separations. However, the price will be in the $48.00
to $50.00 range. Friends of the EBT members will be receiving a flyer with a
special pre-publication discount offer as soon as the price is set. In
addition to the regular edition, the publisher is expecting to offer a
special leatherbound, limited edition autographed by the author at a premium
price. Publication is expected in March or April of 1995.
As an extra bonus for Friends of the EBT, the publisher has arranged to have
all of the 35mm slides from the book copied onto CD-ROM disks. This will
enable FEBT to maintain a permanent record of these historical images and
reproduce them for future historical research. Now all we need is the
capacity to read and use CD-ROM disks. If anyone knows of a good 386 or 486
computer with at least 250Kb hard drive that might be available for donation,
please let TT Editor Phil Padgett know. We've been limping along on an old
286 computer that is on its last legs, and the new technology demands new
equipment.
Colorful East Broad Top Still Available in Hardcover
Heimburger House notes that Colorful East Broad Top, Mallory Hope Ferrell's
1950's all-color book on the EBT is still available in hardcover. The
88-page, horizontal format book features the major points of railroad and
mining interest on the EBT including steam locomotives, freight and passenger
cars, train action, Orbisonia Shops, the Timber Transfer, mixed freights, and
more. See the Summer, 1993 issue of the TT for Tony Koester's review of this
fine book. The limited edition, hardcover version is $32.95 plus $3.75
postage from Heimburger House Publishing, 7236 West Madison Street, Forest
Park, IL 60130. Telephone (708)366-1973.
An Sn3 EBT Mikado form PBL? Open to Being Convinced
For years before he died, Dick Moore used to make periodic calls to PBL, the
leading importer of Sn3 brass narrow gauge locomotive models, to campaign for
production of an Sn3 East Broad Top Mikado. According to Dick, the only
response to his effort then was laughter. All the same, at Dick's insistence,
PBL kept on receiving a complimentary copy of the TT year after year. Well,
for whatever reasons, attitudes change. Here, verbatim, is a notice from
PBL's July, 1994, sheet on future models:
"EAST BROAD TOP MOTIVE POWER: We took a side trip to Orbisonia (in 1993) on
our way back from the NMRA's National Convention held in Valley Forge, PA.
It's a neat, well kept town with a NEAT, well kept steam Railroad running in
it! Fact is, we even captured a whistle from one of its locos for all to hear
(and use) with the Light Steam Upgrade we'll be releasing soon for our
Foreground Sound System!
"Frankly, until this trip, we never could figure out how anybody would want
to model a railroad that was located in PENNSYLVANIA. But, after our visit,
it became readily apparent how a guy could get attached to such things as
INSIDE FRAMED Mikados and such! And so, we're putting 'em back on our list
again! If there's enough interest to put 'em in production, so much the
better! No delivery dates yet, obviously. But that could change! We could
schedule these for as early as next spring if interest warrants. It all
depends on YOU!"
PBL owner Bill Peters states up front that production decisions depend
heavily on the number of reservations in hand, and more reservations
influences where a model goes in the backlog of locos waiting to be produced.
He wants to know if you would like the EBT 2-8-2 to be a "foreground" model
(super, super detailed), painted with sound, painted, or unpainted. You also
might tell him whether you want light No.12, middleweight 14-15, or heavy
16-18, since his notice doesn't indicate that he observed a difference. You
can reach PBL at P.O. Box 769, Ukiah, CA 95482. Telephone (707)462-7680. FAX
